CAS Memory Limits | CAS

CAS memory is limited by the Operating System version.  In general a 32bit version of Microsoft Windows limits CAS to a maximum of 1.4GB (1,400,000KB) of memory.  This is a best scenario and we find that a person can usually get about 1.2GB without too many issues.  Note that Microsoft Windows XP SP2 had a issues where third-part application could not allocate all available memory.  This Microsoft KB article describes the problem.  Approximately 900mb was the maximum on this version.

Once 64bit Windows was introduced the memory allocation limits became obsolete.  With the combination of 64bit  Windows and CAS you can allocate as much memory as your system has.  It is a good idea to leave a chunk behind for other applications such as Excel and Windows itself.  For example: if your system has 12GB of ram and you work on data-sets that are in the 3-4GB range, it would be sufficient to allocate 6GB of ram.  You can always have multiple CAS shortcuts with different memory allocations for different scenarios.
